Hasbro Gaming announces something new for a board game that’s been around for decades, some of the original pieces, such as the scottie dog, race car, top hat and iron, might all be replaced as the public will get a vote on what goes in the game.
“When we decided to replace one of the tokens in the game, we knew we had to involve our fans in the process. We can’t wait to see which iconic piece will ‘go to jail’ and which new token the fans will choose to become part of one of the world’s most popular games,” Eric Nyman, Senior Vice President and Global Brand Leader for Hasbro Gaming said.
It will be interesting to know what pieces will be replaced, based on the public’s least favorite in the vote.
Fans will have the chance to replace the old token with either a diamond ring, guitar, toy robot, cat and helicopter.
Monopoly, invented by Charles Darrow in 1935, had six original pieces, the iron, race car, thimble, shoe, top hat and battleship.
Some of the pieces were not original to the game. For example, the Scottie dog and wheelbarrow were added in the early 1950s.
Darrow invented the game when his young niece suggested he use metal charms from charm bracelets as movers around the game.
The new monopoly game with the voted pieces will be available to purchase in fall 2013.
