A pit bull, named Cain, began barking rapidly to save a NY woman from a fire as she was drying her hair in an upstairs bathroom in East Norwich.
After hearing her dog, Jackie Bonasera told NBC that she looked out the front door and saw flames burning the exterior of the house. However, the 44-year-old was able to escape the house through the garage.
“I ran out of the house and my neighbors came running over, and then I thought about the dog — I’m like, ‘He saved my life, I have to save his,’” Bonasera recounted to NBC.
“So I just put my robe over my face and I ran back in and I grabbed the dog,” she added.
No one was injured in the fire.
Bonasera believes she would have been trapped upstairs if Cain hadn’t alerted her to the fire that took more than 70 firefighters to extinguish.
Alexus Stallworth, Bonasera’s daughter, who was outside the house when the fire broke out around 1:20pm, told NBC that Cain is “the town hero.”
“He’s a pit bull, too,” Stallworth told the New York station. “They have such bad reps, but he’s such a good boy.”
The cause of Friday’s blaze has not been determined. Although the Nassau County Arson and bomb squad is investigating, police don’t believe it’s suspicious.
