198 Pound Tumor – It weighed 198 pounds and is the largest tumor ever to be documented. A man from Vietnam successfully underwent surgery to remove the growth from his right leg. It took a team of doctors several hours to perform the procedure.
Nguyen Duy Hai had the growth removed in a Ho Chi Minh City hospital by a team of doctors lead by an American, Dr. McKay McKinnon, who is known for performing such high risk surgeries. There was only a 50 percent survival rate given to Duy Hai for opting to have the surgery that was to last 10 hours.
“This is a huge procedure with many risks, including the risk of death during surgery or post-operative care,” the hospital said.
Adding, “the patient and the family decided to proceed with the removal nonetheless.”
The 31-year-old Duy Hai had to have his lower leg amputated at 17 because of the 198 pound tumor that started growing when he was a young boy.
Dr.McKinnon waived his fee for performing the surgery that Duy Hai would not have been able to pay for while the remaining hospital fees of around 12,000 american dollars will be paid by donations.
“It’s common for people to fear death, and I’m no exception,” Duy Hai said to Tuoitre News, which is a Vietnamese website of having the 198 pound tumor removed. “But when I heard that Dr. McKinnon had decided to come back to Vietnam one more time to give me a new life, I became more hopeful.”
