203,150 Birkin – A Hermes Diamond Birkin handbag set a world record by fetching $203,150 at Heritage Auctions in Dallas.
The auction house said the Hermes Exceptional Collection Shiny Rouge H Porosus Crocodile 30cm Birkin Bag with Solid 18 karat White Gold & Diamond Hardware fetched the record price for a publicly auctioned handbag, including the 19.5 percent buyer’s premium, at the Dec. 6 auction.
“This is an extraordinary example of one of the world’s most exceptional handbags,” said Matt Rubinger, director of luxury accessories at Heritage Auctions, “and this was certainly an exceptional price, exceeding our highest expectations at every corner.”
Rubinger said a similar bag without the jewels and of a lesser condition fetched $77,000 in England a year ago.
“Everything about this bag measures up much better than that one, which was the auction record until this: the color, the diamonds, the condition — it all combines to make this a singular bag and an extraordinary opportunity for a high-end collector,” Rubinger added.
Heritage company spokesman Noah Fleisher said the item went to a collector who wished to remain anonymous.
At first glance, it looks like the average red alligator purse you could find at a discount store, or at Walmart, but that is where the company says you missed your mark.
It’s hard to see the diamonds and jewelry on this item, but then again, I’m no expert and miss my mark quite often.
