An Iowa man, who was allegedly driving drunk, had a zebra and a parrot with him in his pickup truck as he was stopped by police. He explained to the cops that he had just left the local tavern, called the Dog House Lounge, because animals weren’t allowed in the bar.
Reiter, who said he was not planning to drive home and was about to let a passenger take the wheel when police arrived, said he and his girlfriend, Vickey Teters, treat the animals like their children and often give them a ride in the car.
He claims he sometimes takes the animals into the bar, but the owner says they’re not allowed inside.
Reiter also made sure to tell police that the exotic zebra and parrot were not left alone in his truck and that he was watching them at all times from the bar.
Officers gave Reiter a field sobriety test and charged him with drunken driving. However, he greatly disputes the arrest and said the whole thing was a misunderstanding. He says he was about to let a passenger, a person, begin driving.
He says he thinks someone who came to see the animals called police to tell on him.
Reiter was released Monday after spending the weekend in jail.
