The worlds glaciers have been disappearing mainly to global warming, but one thief has been arrested for stealing over 10,400 pounds of ice from one.
Police in Chile discovered the ice believed to belong to the Jorge Montt glacier, in the back of a refrigerated truck packed into numerous bags.
Experts say that Jorge Montt glacier, which is apart of the Bernardo O’Higgins national park, is one of the fastest shrinking glaciers in the world to begin with, as it is receding by about a half a mile a year.
Police say that the truck was headed 1,200 miles away to the capitol city of Santiago, to be made into designer ice cubes for bars and clubs to use in drinks. The police are charging the unidentified driver with theft and are considering a charge of violating a national monument.
The estimated worth of the ice by local media puts it at around £3,900 or around $5,400 American.
According to a study of a series of photo’s, scientists determined in a time between February 2010 and January 2011 the glacier shrank by 82 feet a day. That is in comparison to a time between 1975 and 2000 when experts say the ice sheet shrank on a yearly average of only 59 feet at lower elevations.
