A 41-year-old Modesto, California high school teacher has been placed under investigation after he left his family and job for a student who is 18.
James Hooker was a teacher who decided to leave his wife and three children to move in with one of his students, Jordan Powers. The two got an apartment together and shortly thereafter the man was placed on administrative leave for his actions. According to a report by local paper the Modesto Bee, he then resigned from his position, where he taught business and computer classes, three weeks later.
At a school were one of Hooker’s children also attend he met Powers, currently a senior, when she was a 14-year-old freshman.
Modesto police are investigating if there was any criminal intent or wrongdoing on Hooker’s part. He denies that there was, and say’s that the two did not engage in sex while Jordan was underage.
Talking to the Modesto Bee about why he decided to do what he did he said, “In making our choice, we’ve hurt a lot of people, we keep asking ourselves, ‘Do we make everyone else happy or do we follow our hearts?'”
Tammie Powers, Jordon’s mother, asked police to look into the matter after she discovered hours of text messages and phone calls between the two, while she was still a minor. Tammie also found a photo of Jordan sitting in Hooker’s lap while she was his student.
Jordan told ABC, “He’s my best friend, I mean, he’s more than just a lover.” She also claims the relationship was never physical before she turned 18.
