A 54-year-old candidate, named Andy Caffrey, out of California who is running for a seat in the U.S. Congress, makes a campaign promise that he will smoke pot on the steps of Capitol Hill if he gets elected.
Caffrey, apparently has made the promise in order to drum up support for the use of medicinal marijuana nationally as it already is in his home state. Just days before making the campaign promise he stood in front of a newly opened medical marijuana dispensary and smoked a prescribed joint.
He suffers from A.D.D. and a posttraumatic stress disorder caused by a sister’s suicide and being homeless for five years, according to his doctor the use of marijuana helps him cope.
“I’m willing to get arrested to fight for our rights, to defend our rights as Californians to consume medicine,” Caffrey, a registered Democrat, said in an interview. “If I have to do it, I’ll smoke a joint on the Capitol steps and get arrested to draw national attention to what’s going on.”
However, Caffrey made it clear that this is not a crusade to ensure that everyone can just get high. “I’m fighting for our right to consume marijuana at will without any criminal penalties,” said Caffrey, who was featured recently in the San Francisco Chronicle. “Just don’t say I’m advocating for children to use it.”
