Chris Christie Mitt Romney. Chris Christie endorses Mitt Romney for President. (Video) The man who much of the sidelined establishment and donor class among Republicans had hoped would run for president, is backing Mitt Romney for president, a Romney official confirms to Politico.
It gives Romney a major boost heading into the latest debate in New Hampshire tonight, and is a serioues “get” as he tries to consolidate support amid Rick Perry’s fade.
While the timing puts Christie out in front rather early, it will allow him to claim credit if a dam of support starts breaking Romney’s way. So far, even with Perry’s troubles in his campaign, it’s been more like a trickle of establishment types toward Romney.
But Romney backers are hopeful that’s about to change, and Christie could end up leading the charge. Just last week, Christie had suggested that he didn’t see anyone among the current crop of candidates speaking to the issues he wanted addressed.
However, he’s also given hints throughout in his public comments as to which way he was leaning – he criticized Perry’s support for in-state tuition for some illegal immigrants during the question-and-answer portion of his Reagan Presidential Library speech.
Christie currently has a title with the Republican Governors Association, a group that both Romney and Perry have been at the helm of. Perry left as chairman just a few months ago to run for president.
