ABC News Senior Foreign Affairs Correspondent Martha Raddatz will moderate the 2012 VP debate.

Martha Raddatz

Raddatz should have a problem keeping Vice President Joe Biden and Republican vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan in line as she has interviewed four-star generals and many world leaders.

The former White House correspondent did recently joke about dodging political barbs at the debate, which might be more frightening than dodging bullets in a war zone, “because you don’t wear body armor.”

Some people are reportedly wondering if Raddatz is the best person to be moderating this debate as her previous husband, Julius Genachowski, is the Federal Communications Commission Chairman. Bennett said Raddatz is skilled in deep listening and empathy, while also possessing a “steely-eyed, no-nonsense approach to complex issues.”

On the other hand, there are others who feel she is the best person for the job.

“There’s not going to be an empty chair there,” said Philip Bennett, managing editor of Frontline and a family friend for more than 15 years. “Her ability to engage seriously, directly, and honestly on these issues is really unmatched in the world of people who’d feel comfortable going on television before millions of people and forcing a genuine conversation and discussion to take place.”
