Paul Ryan had a black college girlfriend as GOP supporters say the revelation shows that he is open-minded, while critics question whether the information is even newsworthy for Mitt Romney’s Presidential campaign.
The news follows reports from earlier this year on President Obama’s college love life and white girlfriends. The Republicans also want to define Ryan. Romney praised his running mate as “a real leader” during their first joint interview with Bob Schieffer on CBS’ “60 Minutes.”
“This is a man who’s dedicated the last 14 years working in Washington in ways that are not highly partisan or political, but instead are focused on what he thinks the right course is for America. And that’s the kind of person I want,” Romney said. “This is a man who’s also very analytical. He’s a policy guy. People know him as a policy guy. That’s one of the reasons he has such respect on both sides of the aisle.”
President Obama welcomed Ryan to the campaign, offering his congratulations while also referring to the Wisconsin lawmaker as the “ideological leader of the Republicans in Congress.”
“Congressman Ryan is a decent man. He is a family man. He’s an articulate spokesman for Gov. Romney’s vision. But it’s a vision that I fundamentally disagree with,” the president said.
Last week, Ryan offered his first outline of his ticket’s vision for the country. “We can turn this thing around,” he said, promising to have “the courage to tell you the truth.”
