The Justice Department announced that the FBI immediately opened an investigation into Roger Clemens on Thursday on whether the Houston Astros pitcher lied under oath to Congress.Leaders of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee told Attorney General Michael Mukasey that they weren't sure if Clemens lied under oath during his testimony on Feb. 5 and the Feb. 13 public hearing. Roger Clemens could face charges for perjury, making false statements or obstruction of justice. Congress did not ask for a similar investigation into Brian McNamee, the former athletic trainer who testified that he injected Clemens with steroids. "The request to open an investigation on the congressional testimony of Roger Clemens has been turned over to the FBI and will receive appropriate investigative action by the FBI's Washington field office" said FBI spokeswoman Debra Weierman. Clemens testified under oath that he never used steroids or HGH. McNamee testified he injected Clemens with performance-enhance drugs at least 16 times from 1998-2001. While Clemens spoke briefly with reporters he didn't answer questions directly. "I'm going to handle it the right way," Clemens said.
