Bronte Science Fiction Exhibition Includes Quartet

The Bronte siblings are on display as the British Library opens its first science fiction exhibition. It includes the quartet of Charlotte, Emily, Anne and Branwell depicted imaginary high-tech worlds in the stories which they wrote when some of them were as young as 10 years of age. It’s amazing exhibit to see.

The Bronte siblings knew their imaginary worlds so well that they drew maps and gave vivid details in their writings. The write-ups are contained on pieces of papers which have been stitched together to form a booklet. The organizers say that that it might be better for enthusiasts to come along with magnifying glasses to better appreciate the contents.

The director of science-fiction studies at the University of Liverpool, Andy Sawyer echoed the advice when he said that, “They’re difficult to get a grip on because they’re written in very tiny handwriting - they were really for distribution among themselves.”

The writings by the Brontes are among the first sci-fi books known to exist. Andy explained that the writers, “[use] favorite characters and settings in the same way as science fiction and fantasy fans now play in the detailed imaginary universes of Star Trek or Harry Potter.” This is the first time that the British Library is honoring science fiction works.
