The all-star lineman who was part of the first national championship team for Alabama, Billy Neighbors, died Monday at the age of 72. He was a member of the College Football Hall of Fame and the Team Captain of the National Champion 1961 University of Alabama Football Team.
The 8 year NFL veteran exemplified what it meant to be a husband, father, grandfather, mentor and leader who led by the example of his actions.
Survivors include his wife, Susan Willa Kinzer Neighbors; children, Wes Neighbors and wife, Phyllis, Claire Neighbors Roby and husband, Bubba, and Keith Neighbors and wife, Kim; grandchildren, Wesley, Connor, and Anna Lakin Neighbors, Ryan and Savannah White, Jackson, Willa, and Billy Roby, Hayden and Lawson Neighbors; and sister, Mary Evelyn Neighbors Johnson and husband, Chester.
Visitation will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at The Wesley Center of the First United Methodist Church.
The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday in the sanctuary of First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Coy Hallmark and Dr. Glenn Conner officiating.
Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery. Laughlin Service Funeral Home is assisting the family.
