Kyle Williams, a kick returner for the San Francisco 49er’s, is now receiving death threats for the loss to the New York Giants over two muffled plays in a tight NFC Championship game.
Williams first blunder occurred in the middle of the 4th quarter with the 49er’s leading 14-10 and about to get the ball back. However, the punt that took several small bounces struck Williams in the knee as he watched it go by, and the Giants recovered it. Set up at the 49er’s 29 yard line, the Giants were able to score the go ahead touchdown to be up 17-14.
San Francisco was able to recover and score a tying field goal and send the game to overtime, where Williams second mistake cost the 49er’s the game.
After making a defensive stop on the Giants second possession of overtime, Williams received the punt and started to make a move up the field when a diving Giants player was able to get a hand on the ball and knock it from Williams grasp and another Giants recovered the fumble. Already in position to kick the game winning field goal the Giants moved the ball a little closer and Lawrence Tynes kicked the eventual winning points for New York.
The loss was disappointing for the 49er’s who seemed to have overcome several bad seasons the last few years, and Williams could have not felt worse.
However, it seems 49er fans are even more upset with Williams, with some sending death threats through Twitter.
One read, “@KyleWilliams_10 HOPE U RUN n2 A BULLET DA WAY U RAN INTO DAT BALL…,” another said, “Jim Harbaugh, please give @KyleWilliams_10 the game ball. And make sure it explodes when he gets in his car.”
Perhaps the worst of all was this one, “@KyleWilliams_10. I hope you, youre wife, kids and family die, you deserve it.”
A spokesman for the San Francisco Police Department, Sgt. Michael Andraychak, had commented that no police report on the death threats has been filed yet, but that Kyle Williams could file with any enforcement agency he choses and it would be investigated.
