News anchor Lauren Sanders and NFL great Barry Sanders are getting a divorce after 12 years of marriage.

Barry Sanders married Lauren Sanders in 2000 after he retired from the Detroit Lions in 1999. They have 3 boys aged 10, 8, and 4 together. The paperwork seeking a divorce was filed in Michigan on Friday and shows that one wants joint custody of the children.

The papers also indicated the reason for the divorce is due to the fact of a breakdown in marital relations.

Lauren Sanders works as a weekend news anchor for a local news station in Detroit.

Barry Sanders became a fan favorite in Detroit while playing for the Lions, from 1989 to 1999, setting 10 different team records. The team retired his #20 after he retired. He is considered one of the greatest running backs of all time to ever play in the NFL.

Sanders greatest season came in 1997 when after he had only total 53 yards through the first two games of the season, went on to surpass the 2,000 rushing yards mark. He set a record in the following 14 games of the season with 14 consecutive games over 100 yards rushing, two of which he had more then 200 yards in.

Just two years after such a great season and still a productive player Sanders abruptly retired. He later admitted though he could still play the losing environment that surrounded the Lions was too much to bare anymore and that he had lost his competitive spirit.
