Houston Cougars demolished the Rice Owls 73-34. Case Keenum added to his list of all-time college football records Thursday by throwing nine touchdown passes in HOUSTON'S 73-34 smashing of RICE.
Keenum, who already held the career total offense and total touchdown records, established a new standard for passing touchdowns and closed in on the all-time passing yardage total as well. He easily kept HOUSTON unbeaten by completing 24-of-37 passes for 534 yards.
The senior quarterback ran his passing touchdown total to 139, five more than the previous record, set in 2008 by Texas Tech's Graham Harrell. He needs 265 more passing yards to set the career record in that category.
HOUSTON is one of eight unbeaten teams remaining in major college football, standing at 8-0 with a 4-0 mark in Conference-USA's Western Division. RICE slipped to 2-6 and 1-4. After a sluggish first period in which HOUSTON found itself trailing 17-14, the Cougars produced 52 points over the second and third quarters.
Keenum came up two touchdown passes short of the single-game record held by HOUSTON'S David Klingler, set in 1990 against Eastern Washington. "Those are video-game numbers, something we couldn't get stopped," RICE linebacker Justin Allen said. "The rain slowed down a little bit ... I wished it would have rained all game. It stopped, and they got things cranked up. There was no looking back for them."
