AMD has unleashed five new processors for the Opteron quad-core family. The new processors have clock speeds ranging from 2.1 to 2.3 GHz and promises to deliver high performance with cost-saving technology.

Advanced Micro Devices Inc has released five new processors for the AMD Opteron family. The new processors have clock speeds ranging from 2.1 to 2.3 GHz and promises to deliver high performance with cost-saving technology. The chip-maker pledges significant new power management capabilities running at 45 nanometers.

"In the current economic environment, data center managers are under more pressure than ever to reduce costs without compromising the latest features or performance," Patrick Patla, AMD general manager for Server and Workstation Business, said in a statement.

AMD Opteron is part of the new HE technology which redeems higher efficiency. The processor is intended for servers and can offer up to 20 percent lower idle power in comparison to other chips. In addition, the new chips operate cooler and run at 55-watt ACP.

"The new Quad-Core AMD Opteron HE series processor offers unrivaled performance-per-watt and cost-efficiencies for a wide range of configurations without a potential front-side bus bottleneck. In the second quarter AMD plans to take energy-efficiency to the next level in introducing even lower ACP processors for the unique demands of cloud computing environments," Patla said.

While Intel is still domineering the global processor market, AMD is concentrating more on new technologies for its chips. The chip-maker is aiming more for the server business market but does have plans to launch new processors for desktop PCs later this year.

The new AMD Opteron quad core is available from solution providers such as Newegg, Dell, Sun, HP, and other global OEMs.
