Nokia Mobile Phones to Offer IBM Lotus Notes for E-mail

Nokia mobile phones will be able to access IBM Lotus Notes e-mail in an effort to battle against rival RIM BlackBerry mobile. The new IBM software will be available on Nokia smart phones next month. The cell phone maker has more than 80 million users.

Nokia Corp and IBM Corp on Wednesday announced support for Lotus Notes E-mail on Nokia S60 mobile phones. IBM Lotus Notes will offer mobile phone users access to corporate e-mail. The IBM software will be available next month.

"People need to be connected to their email, information and network when they are out of the office and that has to be done conveniently and on their terms. Lotus Notes Traveler for Nokia devices is a great example of that," Soren Petersen, Nokia senior vice president, said in a statement.

IBM Lotus Notes has 140 million licensed users. More than 80 million people use Nokia mobile phones. Nokia customers will now be able to purchase Lotus Notes and access its features on the go. The software is designed for Nokia S60-based smart phones.

Lotus Notes Traveler is a server platform application that provides real time access. IBM's Institute for Business Value reported that more people in the world use a mobile device than a traditional land-line telephone.

Nokia mobile phones will have access to e-mail, calendars, address book and journal. IBM will also introduce new to-do list data in early December 2008. Nokia ended development of its own mobile e-mail smart phone application this year. The cell phone maker opted to look for partners instead to better challenge RIM BlackBerry mobile phones.
