The Nintendo Wii outsells the Sony PlayStation 3 in Japan for the month of June.
The Nintendo Wii has become the number 1 game console for the seventh consecutive month after outselling rival Sony PS3 console by 1.7-to-1. However, the June figures fall short of the 6-to-1 lead it had in May of this year.
With the successful June launch of "Metal Gear Solid 4" for the PS3, Sony increased demand for its PlayStation 3 video game console.
Nintendo held the lead with 235,990 units sold for Wii console in the five weeks ending June 29, while sales of the PS3 came to 139,494 units. Microsoft Corp's Xbox 360 trails the pack, with sales of 10,964 units.
While the PS3 is closing in on the number 1 spot, in comparison to May and June sales, it still has a lot of catching up to do in total sales around the world.
Sony has sold 12.85 million units of its PS3 console worldwide by the end of March, or just half of the number in sales for the Nintendo Wii. Both rival units were launched in late 2006.
Sony sold 274,131 of its PlayStation Portable handheld during the five-week period, surpassing Nintendo, which sold 195,714 DS units.
