Australian billionaire Clive Palmer wants to use his fortune to build a working replica of the famous ship that sunk 100 years ago called the Titanic II.

Palmer wants a Chinese ship yard named CSC Jinling Shipyard, to build the flagship in a new fleet of cruise ships, which will be a replica of the original Titanic, then have it sale into New York harbor, like the original one was scheduled to do. He also wants it escorted by a Chinese warship.

The 58-year-old Plamer made his fortune through mining ventures and expects the maiden voyage of the Chinese built Titanic II to make its maiden voyage across the Atlantic in 2016.

Palmer says that the replica will have the same dimensions of the original ship complete with the 4 signature smoke stacks, but with major technological upgrades. “It is going to be designed so it won’t sink,” Mr. Palmer told reporters. “It will be designed as a modern ship with all the technology to ensure that doesn’t happen.”

He added, “It will be every bit as luxurious as the original Titanic, but, of course, it will have state-of-the-art 21st-century technology and the latest navigation and safety systems.”

Palmer, who has previously accused the CIA of funding clandestine campaigns in Australia, says that the Chinese Navy would only be invited to escort the ship across the Atlantic to New York. Likely as a symbol of its ship building capabilities as China looks to become more involved in the luxury liner industry that is 75% run by European companies.
