A Jet Blue flight destined for Las Vegas had to be diverted after passengers has to detain their pilot, Clayton Osbon, who was suffering from a mental breakdown.
During the flight that had departed from JFK in New York, Osbon had tried to gain access to an already occupied bathroom, and later became more agitated when he could not get back into the cockpit. The flight’s co-pilot locked the cockpit door because Osbon was acting erratically. The pilot then went on a rant in the aisle about terrorists and said the plane was going down.
“It seemed that something was off with him,” said one passenger Gabriel Schonzeit “Within a short period of time, he started screaming about Al-Qaeda and possibly a bomb on the plane and Iraq and Iran and how we’re all going down.”
Several passengers then had to tackle Osbon while the co-pilot made an emergency landing in Amarillo, Texas. After landing, Osbon was handed over to law enforcement and was brought to a medical center for treatment. He is being charged with interfering with a flight.
“The first thing I saw was the captain running down the aisle,” passenger Laurie Dhue said on TODAY, adding he was “banging on the door, saying ‘Let me in! Let me in!’ ” Dhue credited the “brave people on board” for handling the situation, saying it was “literally like a scene from a movie.”
Meanwhile, CEO Dave Barger said he knew the Osbon personally, and he had never shown signs of this type of behavior before.
“I don’t think when he got up this morning that that’s what he was intending to do,” passenger Charlie Restivo told the AP. “Unfortunately, I just think it happened to him.”
