Pest control company Terminix has come out with its annual report listing the top cities with the most bedbug’s infestation, and this year a new city has been named.
New York had previously held the distinct honor of having the biggest bed bug problem for the last two years running. However, this year they have been topped by another big east coast city according to Terminix’s report, which is Philadelphia.
Terminix used the reporting of over 300 of its nationwide branches to compile the data for the rankings, that saw New York actually be passed by two cities for the most cases of bed bugs. The other being Cincinnati that ranked 2 on the list.
Stoy Hedges, entomologist at Terminix, said: “Bedbugs continue to increase their presence across the U.S. While major metropolitan areas are most at risk, it is important to note that bedbugs have been spotted in cities and towns across the country.”
Rounding out the top 5 after New York was dropped to 3 on the list was, Chicago at #4 and Detroit was #5. Other cities that have made the top 15 list for the first time included Cleveland, Miami, Houston, Indianapolis and New Haven, Conn.
Terminix recommends to avoid bringing bedbugs into your own home after a visit to another city, you first inspect the hotel mattresses, headboards and box springs and that you should always hang your clothing to avoid using the drawers, where bed bugs can also hideout in. They also advise the first thing you should do when arriving home is to vacuum out your suitcase and wash all your cloths in hot water.
