Baby Falls Eight Stories While Mother Jumps Out Window

A West Harlem woman falls eight stories to her death with her baby in her arms. Cynthia Wachenheim took her 10-month-old son, Keston, in her arms and jumped out of her apartment window, on Wednesday, in a apparent suicide attempt.

Thankfully, the child was found alive not too far from his mother’s arms. According to the police officer who responded to the scene, he was taken to the hospital where he is listed in critical but stable condition.

Crime scene investigators found a seven-page suicide note in Wachenheim’s apartment that she shared with her husband.

In the note, the 45-year-old Wachenheim said she recognized what she was about to do was “evil” but she was concerned about how her child was developing, according to a law enforcement official with knowledge of the case. The official was not authorized to speak publicly. He spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity.

According to police, there were no signs of a struggle inside the residence. Surveillance footage from the apartment complex showed the woman’s husband leaving their home about an hour before she jumped out of the window.

Steven Dominguez, 18, and his mother Adelina saw the woman fall to her death. He stated that the baby bounced off her body, breaking some of the impact of the fall, before hitting the ground nearby.

“I heard a scream like a yell,” Dominguez said. “When I got closer, I saw the baby crying.”

He said the baby was face down. “I was shocked,” he said. “I couldn’t believe it.”

“We are all deeply saddened about this tragic incident,” state court’s spokesman David Bookstaver said. “Our thoughts are with Ms. Wachenheim’s family.”
