University Cheerleader Death Investigated, School Officials Confirm
Cheerleader Death Investigated - A death is being investigated at the University of Louisville after a student was found Monday morning, school officials confirm. The cheerleader was found in the Cardinal Towne apartment complex.
Danielle Cogswell, a transfer student who grew up in Washington, was a cheerleader at Louisville for a year. School officials said Louisville police are handling the investigation.
“She will always be remembered for her smile and her dedication to her team,” said Christine Simatocolos, Louisville’s associate athletic director for student life.
Louisville Metro Police spokesman Dwight Mitchell said Monday night that no obvious signs of foul play in the cheerleader death investigation. A toxicology report will be completed to determine the cause. The case is being handled by Louisville homicide detectives.
Mitchell said the LMPD homicide unit was handling the cheerleader found dead investigation, a common practice in the department. He also said investigators are waiting for autopsy and toxicology test results. Cogswell was still using social media late Sunday afternoon, posting a photo on Instagram at 3:52 p.m. and two retweets on Twitter just after that.
By Monday afternoon, there was an outpouring of social media messages sent to Cogswell’s accounts, using the hashtag #ripdani.
“The University of Louisville spirit program is devastated to lose one of our beautiful and talented team members,” spirit coach Todd Sharp said in a statement. Counseling services are being offered to students who knew Cogswell, reports WHAS. “Dani had a contagious smile and a spirit that would ignite the room,” Sharp said. “She will be greatly missed.”
U of L couldn’t confirm any other details surrounding the cheerleader found dead, with Simatocolos relaying all questions to the Louisville Metro Police Department. Simatocolos and school spokesman Mark Hebert Monday evening could not confirm how many credits Cogswell had, which would determine her class.
“We are saddened by the loss of a member of the University of Louisville’s student family,” U of L President James Ramsey said in a news release. “Our prayers and condolences go out to Dani’s family and friends and we will support them any way we can,” he said.
While the cheerleader death is still being investigated, there are a few things about the student. She lived in Washington state prior to attending the University of Louisville, but was a native of Pittsburgh. Cogswell attended Skyline High School in Issaquah, Washington, graduating in 2010. In the cheerleader’s senior year, she helped Skyline win the state cheerleading crown.
