Dzhokhar Tsarnaev may have tried to kill himself in the throat as police were closing in. Investigators are speculating that Tsarnaev’s throat injury is from a self-inflicted gun shot wound.
The wound may have been caused by a gun that was fired through the mouth and is also wounded in the leg.
Tsarnaev remained sedated and in serious condition Sunday after suffering unspecified injuries, including to the throat, during a police shootout and ensuing manhunt.
Tsarnaev’s older brother, 26-year-old Tamerlan Tsarnaev, died during that same shootout with cops early Friday.
The pair is accused of setting off two bombs — made from ordinary kitchen pressure cookers packed with explosives, nails and ball bearings — at the Boston Marathon on Monday that killed three people and injured more than 180 others.
They also killed a Massachusetts Institute of Technology police officer and then carjacked a man Thursday, police said, setting off the shootout with cops and putting the Boston area on lockdown.
Tamerlan Tsarnaev was struck by so many bullets during the gun battle with cops that authorities couldn’t determine which wounds were fatal.
Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was captured in Watertown, Mass., where police searched frantically door-to-door and eventually found him hiding in a boat parked in a homeowner’s driveway.
He was taken to Boston’s Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and remains under heavy guard.
Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick told reporters Saturday afternoon that Tsarnaev was in “serious but stable” condition.
Investigators are still trying to piece together what motivated the week of carnage and terror.
Tsarnaev is enrolled as a sophomore at UMass-Dartmouth.
