Easter Egg Roll Gets Underway At White House For Monday’s 134th

Preschoolers and parents affiliated with the Royal Castle Child Development Center will participate in Monday’s 134th annual White House Easter Egg Roll at the invitation of Michelle Obama. The wife of President Barack Obama visited with the children during a Nov. 1 trip to New Orleans.

Mrs. Obama is all about healthy eating and exercise to combat childhood obesity. The theme of this year’s egg roll is “Let’s Go, Let’s Play, Let’s Move,” and the 50 New Orleans invitees are among 35,000 who will be on the South Lawn for games, stories and the traditional egg roll.

A White House press release noted that “in addition to all the fun and games, the day’s activities — which will include sports courts and cooking demonstrations — will help educate families on smart ways to incorporate healthy eating and exercise choices into their daily routines, which are key pillars of First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! Initiative.”

“I don’t know all of the details, and I don’t care. I know it’s going to be nice,” said Pearlie Harris, the center’s director, who said her main focus is getting everyone there and back safely. The trip was an expensive proposition for the New Orleans guests, who had to bear their own expenses, costing a parent-and-child twosome about $600.

Harris said anyone wanting to help defray those costs can contribute to a fund she set up at Capital One Bank. “Go to a Capital One Bank and just say, ‘Royal Castle Easter Egg Roll and the White House,’ ” Harris said.
