Federal employees going home early. Federal employees were sent home early Tuesday after going to work in icy conditions. The weather problems caused three deaths in the metropolitan area.

The weather caused icy conditions that snarled traffic, hampered mass transit operations and closed most area school systems. Federal employees were allowed to leave three hours early. A rainy mist brought six inches of snow already on the ground this week.

The decision officially applies to about 285,000 employees working at federal offices within the Beltway. Most local jurisdictions, schools, universities and private employers usually follow the government's status. Emergency workers had to report to work as normal.

This is the third early dismissal of the year for D.C.-area federal employees. Government offices closed for four consecutive days in February due to major snow. Nonessential workers had to notify their supervisors of the decision.
