Firehiwot Dado New York Marathon – Ethiopian runners Firehiwot Dado and Buzunesh Deba finished 1-2 in the ING New York City Marathon. A few minutes later, Kenyan Geoffrey Mutai won the men’s race followed by countryman Emmanuel Mutai.
Geoffrey Mutai set a New York course record, winning in 2:05.06. The record was 2:07.43.
Dado and Deba chased down Kenya’s Mary Keitany, who held an early commanding lead and was on pace to set a course record in the first half.
Dado, 27, won in an unofficial time of 2:23.16. She is a three-time marathon winner in Rome making her NYC debut.
Deba, who trains in New York, finished three seconds behind Dado. Deba was 10th in New York last year.
11:21 a.m.: At mile 20 in the men’s race, Keflezighi has fallen off the lead group, which has dwindled to a handful of runners: G. Mutai, Gebremariam, E. Mutai, Kebede.
11:10 a.m.: Keitany is 1:28 ahead of Ethiopian runners Firehiwot Dado and Buzunesh Deba with 5 miles to go.
In the men’s race at mile 16, American Meb Keflezighi is in the lead pack with Emmanuel Mutai, Geoffrey Mutai, Tsegaye Kebede, Matthew Kisorio, Gebre Gebremariam and a couple of others.
