They were found in a very steep corridor at 8,858 feet a day after they left an overnight Alpine refuge. While all the reports are just speculation as of now, an investigation has been opened to try and determined what actually happen. They found the hikers tied together by two ropes in the cliff which is used on a normal basis.

The mayor explained that anything could have happen, everything is a hypothesis. He says they could have been victims of a broken snow bridge or an avalanche. One thing is for sure this was one of the worst fatalities linked to climbing in France since 2007, since five bodies from the same family were located on a nearby mountain.
