George Zimmerman is still in the news even though he’s free after a not guilty verdict was handed down in his murder trial in July, but his in-laws have reported a theft at one of the homes where he’s the tenant, claiming hundreds of dollars in items were missing.
Police received a call from Machelle Dean about the home she and her husband own.
“There was some damage to the house. Who committed that damage, I don’t know. Was it there before hand, I don’t know,” Lake Mary police officer Zach Hudson said. “We’re trying to figure out exactly what we have here.”
Police say the incident stems from a landlord/tenant issue. The Deans had been leasing the home to George and their daughter, Shellie Zimmerman, who are now estranged. According to the complaint, George Zimmerman was to vacate the home by Sept. 26, at which time the Deans would retain control of the property.
Authorities are in the process of interviewing all of the parties involved in the claim, reports the station.
Police declined to say what was allegedly stolen, but the Orlando Sentinel reports police say the items reported stolen include pieces of furniture and a television. Police told WKMG they do not have any suspects at this time. It’s not clear if the complaint will be investigated as a civil or criminal matter.
The Lake Mary home that police responded to Thursday is the same residence police were called to earlier in September after an altercation broke out between George and Shellie Zimmerman.
In a 911 call from that incident, Shellie Zimmerman alleged George Zimmerman punched her father in the face. She also accused her estranged husband of grabbing her iPad, throwing it to the ground and breaking it. No charges were filed.
WKMG reports Officer Hudson told the station Friday that authorities have decided to try to obtain video from the shattered iPad and have sent the pieces off to a forensics lab.
George and Shellie Zimmerman are going through a divorce.
George Zimmerman was acquitted in July of murder in the 2012 fatal shooting of Florida teen Trayvon Martin.
