Grandmother arrested for allegedly hiring her 19-year-old grandson to kill his grandfather.
Janet Strickland, 64, was apparently ‘sick’ of her husband, William Strickland, 72, and wanted him dead so she could inherit his money.
Last month, as the elderly man waited for someone to pick him up and take him to his dialysis appointment, he was shot six times. It is believed that his wife watched as their grandson shot him from behind with his own gun.
William Strickland Jr. was arrested on March 30, and charged with first degree murder. Reportedly, Janet Strickland generously rewarded her grandson for killing his grandfather.
Prosecutors say William Jr spent the stolen money on a new phone, gym shoes and tattoos, while neighbours reported that Janet Strickland bought her grandson a bright red Pontiac car as well as furniture for herself.
They have both been charged with first-degree murder and armed robbery.
Assistant State’s Attorney Jacqueline Kwilos told reporters the pair ‘discussed on numerous occasions killing the victim. [Janet Strickland] stated numerous times to her grandson that she was sick of his grandfather and that she wanted her husband dead. She stated she wished he was not here and she wanted him gone.’
Mario Farmer, who lives two doors down from the family said he saw the younger Strickland with a new red car with no tags about two weeks after the shooting. At one point the young man was putting in a new sound system with a group of friends.
“He was hooking it up, but I was surprised he had it so quick because he wasn’t working,” Farmer added.
