Landlords are supposed to be civil, but tenants who rented from Kip and Nicole Macy say the San Francisco couple are from hell. However, they have been sentenced to 4 1/2 years in prison.
Landlords Kip, 38, and Nicole, 37, both from San Francisco, pleaded guilty to stalking, felony counts of residential burglary, and attempted grand theft.
All of their illegal acts stemmed from their unsuccessful attempts to evict tenants from an apartment building they own in San Francisco’s South of Market district.
“The actions of these defendants are so outlandish and brazen that it sounds like the plot line of a horror movie,” said San Francisco District Attorney George Gascón in a statement announcing the couple’s sentencing on Wednesday.
Under a plea agreement, they are to be sentenced in August to four years and four months behind bars, Gascón added. Until then, they are in County Jail on $2 million bail each.
Court documents show that these “landlords from hell” began their mischievous acts back in 2005, after they purchased the apartment building with five tenants still living there.
Mr. Macy’s attorney, Lisa DewBerry, told the San Francisco Chronicle that the sentences were, “not out of bounds,” adding that the case, “highlights the limitations of tenant-landlord laws in the city.”
