Mark David Chapman parole board hearing. Mark David Chapman, who killed former Beatle John Lennon, is up for parole some time this week. Chapman is expected to face Yoko Ono, John Lennon’s widow, in an effort to block his parole.
Chapman has been behind bars in Attica for 29 years for shooting and killing former Beatle John Lennon. January 1981, he was sentenced to a term of 20 years to life for his second degree murder charge. The now 55-year-old has already been denied parole six times.
The last time he came up for parole was in 2008, it was denied “due to concern for the public safety and welfare.” According to prison personnel Chapman “has not had an infraction since 1994.” Lennon’s widow, Yoko Ono, fears that she and her son Sean would be in grave danger if Mark David Chapman were to be released on parole.
“I am afraid it will bring back the nightmare, the chaos and confusion (of that night) once again,” Yoko Ono said in a statement. Ono was with Lennon the night he was shot outside of their apartment building in New York City. Chapman shot Lennon four times in the back.
He remained at the scene until arrested by police. He pleaded guilty to the crime. “The result would be that I would be famous, the result would be that my life would change and I would receive a tremendous amount of attention, which I did receive… I was in a very confused, dark place,” Chapman stated about the murder.
