A series of Missouri shootings by a gunman occurred at up to six different crime scenes leaving nine people dead. Citing Texas county sheriff James Sigman, WCVB Boston reported that there are at least four confirmed crimes scenes, and possibly a fifth and sixth location in a neighboring Missouri county.

The Texas county sheriff’s department said it responded to an emergency call just after 10pm on Thursday from a young girl reporting gunshots. The girl fled to a neighbor’s house, and deputies found two bodies in the home from which the girl called.

“Further investigation revealed five additional victims who were deceased and one additional victim who was wounded in three additional residences,” the department said. An elderly woman who died of apparent natural causes was found dead in another residence, the police said. In total, nine people, including the elderly woman and the apparent gunman, were found dead.

A Missouri state highway patrol officer told the paper the alleged shooter was among the dead. Sergeant Jeff Kinder told the Associated Press the 36-year-old suspect was found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound early Friday morning.

Reuters on MSN.com said that seven people were thought to be victims of one man who died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to a statement by the highway patrol. One elderly woman was found dead of what appeared to be natural causes during an investigation.

The events unfolded around 10 p.m. Thursday night when the Texas County Sheriff’s Department responded to a call about a disturbance involving a weapon at a residence in Tyrone. A girl called authorities, saying she had fled to a neighbor’s house after hearing gunshots in her home.

Deputies found two dead in the residence. After further investigation, authorities said they found five other victims and one person who was wounded in three other homes in Tyrone.

A 36-year-old man from Tyrone, considered the suspect in the case, was found dead in a vehicle in nearby Shannon County. It appeared the man shot himself, the highway patrol said. He was not immediately identified.

Authorities did not say how the victims might have been related, or provide a motive for the killings.

Houston School District Superintendent Scott Dill said the killings shocked the small community.

My students and my teachers are very upset. I have a lot of very upset children,” Dill said. “Everybody knows everybody here. We all cry together.”

The Houston School district is in Texas County and has about 1,100 students.

The killings took place in a thinly populated, rural part of the state, near the Mark Twain National Forest. The region is known to attract tourists for its hunting, camping, and river rafting.

Meanwhile, state troopers and deputies have been mobilized in the area.

The Houston Herald reported that the staff at the district schools have been told to arrive early to provide counseling sessions; there has been no confirmation on whether children were killed.

Texas county, Missouri, is in the southern part of the state near the Arkansas border and has a population just under 30,000 people, according to the 2010 Census.
