Peace corps volunteer killed. Peace corps volunteer Tommy Maresco set out on a mission to better the world, but was killed in Lesotho. At only 24, he joined the Peace Corps in Africa and was living that dream as a volunteer.
“I asked him and I looked him in the eye and I said, ‘Tommy is this what you really want to do?’ And he said, ‘If I don’t do it Uncle Keith I will regret it all my life,'” recalled Maresco’s uncle, Keith Serrago.
Maresco’s plans were cut short when he was shot and killed Friday in Lesotho. According to the director of the Peace Corps, his death was the result of an attempted robbery.
Serrago called his nephew’s death “so senseless and so unnecessary.”
“Ignorance, which is all over the world,” said Serrago. “That’s why Tommy went there, to educate.”
Maresco graduated from the University of Florida in 2008 and last year went on to volunteer as a science teacher for the Peace Corps. He also coached sports there. To his family he was even more: a son, a cousin, a friend, a talented musician, an aspiring doctor, and a hero who will never be forgotten.
“Every now and then you get that special kid and we had one,” cried Serrago. “This family will never be the same and I don’t know how my sister and Tommy, my brother-in-law is going to survive this.”
