Spain Earthquakes Kill 10 - Officials record the highest two quake-related deaths in 50 years as Spain earthquake kills 10 people. Many buildings also suffered damage as the earthquakes subsided. It struck close to Lorca, Spain with a magnitude 5.2.
The second earthquake proceeded two hours after the first, which gave hospitalized people in Lorca time to evacuate. The Murcia regional government said about 270 patients at the hospital were being evacuated by ambulance.
Juani Avellanada, resident of Lorca, told newspaper El Pais in a statement, “I felt a tremendously strong movement, followed by a lot of noise, and I was really frightened.” Another resident seemed to have an even more frightening experience when Juana Ruiz’s house split in half, accord to what she told El Pais.
A Spanish TV show was capturing the footage as it happened. They showed images of cars being crushed by falling debris and large building cracking up and down. The reporter also talked about an area in the town where school kids usually meet at that time. If they had been there today the earthquake, which took apart the church, would have crushed them.
