A toddler was mauled in Georgia by seven dogs her family owned while the grandmother fell asleep in the house. She eventually woke up and heard the commotion.
Bryan County Sheriff Clyde Smith said the grandmother saw the girl being attacked as she looked out her window. The toddler, Monica Renee Laminack, died at the scene.
On previous occasions, the girl apparently played with the dogs, but it is not clear why they attacked.
“All the dogs had access to the house, nine dogs in all,” Smith was quoted as saying. “She habitually played with dogs, all of them. But they drug her all over the yard. Something turned them on her. We don’t know what,” he added.
“When we got here and spoke to EMS, they told us that when they got here, she was already cold. There was nothing they could do,” Bryan County Deputy Sheriff James Beatty said in a statement.
Authorities say the dogs, pit bulls and pit bull mixes, have been euthanized by Bryan County Animal Control.
It was unclear Wednesday night if charges would be filed.
Beatty said the 12-year-old brother of the girl may have mistakenly left the girl outside with the dogs. He said that the toddler might have went out the doggy door and into the yard.
