Highway motorists were confronted with a racial slur, pointing to Trayvon Martin, at a construction site after a sign was hacked in Michigan. The purpose of the digital text reader s to warn drivers of construction or lane closures.
However, a sign was used Monday to display a hateful message about Trayvon Martin, 17, who was fatally shot by George Zimmerman on February 26, 2012, in Sanford, Florida.
The young African-American boy was unarmed when he was shot by George Zimmerman a 28-year-old Hispanic American who was acting as a community watch coordinator at the time of the shooting.
Rob Morosi, the spokesman for the Michigan Department of Transportation, stated, “An unauthorized person was able to get into the box attached to the portable sign along westbound I-94 near Livernois around 1 a.m. Monday and pull out the keyboard.”
“These signs, obviously, are in cabinets which someone has to break into. And then they have to be knowledgeable as to how to erase the message that’s on there, create a new message and activate it,” Morosi added.
Michigan State Police with assistance from the MDOT is investigating to find out who changed the sign to read “Trayvon A Nigger.” According to Morosi whoever is responsible for this act could be facing serious charges.
