Tropical Storm Igor Update – Igor is strengthening and the National Weather Service predicts that the tropical storm will become a hurricane tonight. The storm was located approximately 1,030 miles west of the Cape Verde Island. It is approximately 1,470 miles east of the Leeward Islands as of 11 a.m. Saturday.
Igor is moving westward at 21 mph (33 kph) and has a maximum sustained wind of 70 mph (110 kph). For the next 48 hours, this general motion is expected with some decrease in forward speed. It remains far from land and was about 915 miles (1,475 kilometers) west of the Cape Verde Islands early Saturday.
In addition, forecasters are watching an area of low pressure closer to home in the Caribbean Sea. New for 2010 is an expanded set of abbreviations indicating the storm strength.
D: Tropical Depression — wind speed less than 39 MPH
S: Tropical Storm — wind speed between 39 MPH and 73 MPH
H: Hurricane — wind speed between 74 MPH and 110 MPH
M: Major Hurricane — wind speed greater than 110 MPH
