Weston, Florida Bans Nightclubs As Broward County Crime Rises – The City of Weston, Florida located near Miami, has decided to ban any businesses that are nightclubs or dance halls as the Broward county crime rises. Well, that’s their reason for it, but the small town is similar to the one featured in the movie Footloose.
The ban is mostly because most of Weston’s 65,000 plus residents don’t want to deal with the headaches that such establishments cause, such as noise, additional traffic, and extra resources out of the budget to police.
“There aren’t those uses in Weston, there won’t be those uses in Weston, and we were never planning to allow those uses in Weston,” Weston Mayor Eric Hersh told the Sun Sentinel. “This is something that we thought would protect the city.”
City Manager John Flint told the Sun Sentinel, that the reputations of nightclubs in nearby towns are causing issues with the use of drugs and alcohol and has made the Weston residents want no part of it in their community.
He went on to note that there were none of those types of businesses in the city and now the new ordinance will ensure there never is.
Mayor Hersch echoed that sentiment, “We just thought this was the best thing for our city.”
City Commissioner Jim Norton said that the only activities that will be allowed are school dances and periodic gatherings at the local YMCA.
