Deep Horizon oil rig catches fire after a major explosion. The offshore drilling platform was under contract with BP.

Deep Horizon oil rig is located off Louisiana’s coast. It suffered a major explosion and fire that left seven workers hurt and 11 missing. The offshore drilling platform had 126 people onboard.

“It’s burning pretty good and there’s no estimate on when the fire will be put out,” Coast Guard Senior Chief Petty Officer Mike O’Berry said in a statement.

Two victims were taken to a trauma center in Mobile, Alabama. The facility has a burn unit and other members of the crew were taken to a hospital in New Orleans. O’Berry said many workers who escaped the rig were being brought to land as rescuers continue to search the Gulf of Mexico.

“We’re hoping everyone’s in a life raft,” O’Berry said.

Offshore Drilling Platform And BP

Oil rigs usually drill off the coast but this one wasn’t in production. The offshore platform was under contract to BP PLC. The rig was located in deep-water about 50 miles southeast of New Orleans and Alabama.

The crew evacuated the rig at approximately 8:10 a.m. local time. Authorities searched for as many as 15 people at one point. There are 11 crew members still missing from the 126 that were onboard.


Rescuers spotted a life boat with people aboard about 2 a.m., but it soon drifted out sight. Four Coast Guard helicopters, four rescue boats and a plane are searching the waters for it. Ninety survivors are currently on a work boat and will arrive in Port Fouchon later today.

An offshore platform is a l%u0430rge structure used to house workers and machinery needed to drill wells in the ocean bed. It is used to extract gas and has the ability to process the produced fluids. The processed fluid is then shipped or piped to land for distribution.

Most offshore platforms are located on the continental shelf. Drilling and production in deeper waters have become both feasible and economically viable. A typical platform may contain up to thirty wellheads located on the platform. Remote sub-sea wells may also be connected to a platform by flow lines and by umbilical connections.

Semi-submersible platforms have hulls of sufficient buoyancy to cause the structure to float. They can be moved from place to place but are generally anchored when drilling. Semi-submersibles can be used in water depths from 200 to 10,000 feet.

A typical production platform is self-sufficient in energy and water needs. It has its own electrical generation and water desalinators. Elements in the gas production process include wellhead, production manifold, production separator, glycol process to dry gas, gas compressors, water injection pumps, gas export metering and main line pumps.
