Debbie Gibson and Tiffany the biggest singing teen pop stars in th 1980’s have announced they will team up for a tour. Since there rise to the top of the charts in the 8o’s Tiffany has turned into a country singer, and Gibson has been working in musical theater. Their joint tour will be called “Journey Through The 80’s” and start in New York on July 29th.
Though back then the 2 seemed to be a bit of a rivalry, they say nothing could be further from the truth. Gibson, now 40, recalls listening to Tiffany’s breakthrough single, a chart-topping 1987 cover of, I Think We’re Alone Now, “every time I was on a plane, during takeoff, because it’s so driving. My sister and I had a Walkman, and we each had headphones, and we’d listen together.” And Gibson’s 1988 ballad Lost In Your Eyes, another No 1 hit, “is one of my favorite songs,” coos Tiffany, now 39.
In 1987, Gibson was pronounced the youngest artist to write, produce, and perform a No 1 single on the Billboard Hot 100, with her song “Foolish Beat” and she remains the youngest female to write, record, and perform a No 1 single to date. She has gone on to starring roles on Broadway and touring musicals, as well as independent film and television work. She continues to record, and reached the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart as high as No. 24 during 2006 in a duet with Jordan Knight titled “Say Goodbye.”
In 1985, Tiffany appeared on Star Search with Ed McMahon, where she finished second place overall. Her second single, a cover of Tommy James & the Shondells’ hit,”I Think We’re Alone Now”, became a number one hit on the Billboard Hot 100 list.Tiffany alsoset a record for the youngest female artistst to top the Billboard charts witha debut album.
