Remake Of ‘Dirty Dancing’ Coming

A remake of the 1987 film ‘Dirty Dancing’ will be coming to a theatre near you. The film’s original choreographer, Kenny Ortega, will direct the remake. Ortega said he looks forward to casting the successors to the original movie’s stars, Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze.

Ortega was once attached to the “Footloose” remake before passing on that project. He was behind the “High School Musical” flicks, and helmed “Michael Jackson’s This Is It.” Back in the day he directed movies like “Newsies” and “Hocus Pocus.”

“Patrick Swayze set the bar for men dancing in the movies as Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire did before him. I believe everywhere you look there is evidence that the talent is out there and I can’t wait to begin the process of discovering the next breakout triple-threats,” Ortega said in the statement. Diagnosed with Stage IV pancreatic cancer in January 2008, Swayze told Barbara Walters a year later that he was “kicking it”. However, he died from the disease on September 14, 2009.

The story is a coming of age drama that documents a teenage girl’s rebellion against her father by starting a relationship with a dance instructor during the family’s summer vacation. Originally a low-budget film by a new studio and with no major stars, except Broadway legend Jerry Orbach in a supporting role, Dirty Dancing became a massive box office hit As of 2009, it earned over $214 million worldwide. It was the first film to sell more than a million copies on home video.

The Dirty Dancing soundtrack generated two multi-platinum albums and multiple singles, including “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life”, which won both the Golden Globe and Academy Award for Best Original Song, and a Grammy Award for best duet. Recently the song got updated by the Black Eyed Peas when it was sampled for their song “The Time (Dirty Bit).” “I think it’s crazy the way the world works, because ['Dirty Dancing' star] Jennifer Grey is now on ‘Dancing With the Stars,’ and for some reason that song kind of meant something to us, because we kind of have had an amazing run. I mean, it just keeps going and it keeps going,” Fergie explained to MTV News of the sample’s significance.
