The Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe, now 21, has admitted to his problem with alcoholism. He spoke about developing a drinking problem while filming the Harry Potter franchise in British GQ. He said the the problem started while shooting the “Half Blood Prince” in 2009.
“I became so reliant on [alcohol] to enjoy stuff,” Radcliffe said.
“There were a few years there when I was just so enamored with the idea of living some sort of famous person’s lifestyle that really isn’t suited to me,” said the actor.
Radcliffe says he stopped the drinking last August and hasn’t had a drink since. His turnaround came shortly after shooting wrapped last summer on the final installment, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2. “There’s no shame in enjoying a quiet life. And that’s been the realization of the past few years for me,” he says.
He actually skipped a premiere party for the film to avoid being tempted. He adds, “As much as I would love to be a person that goes to parties and has a couple of drinks and has a nice time, that doesn’t work for me. I’d just rather sit at home and read, or go out to dinner with someone, or talk to someone I love, or talk to somebody that makes me laugh.”
Radcliffe, was cast as Harry Potter at the age of eleven. The seventh and final installment of the series is set for release in theaters on July 15th. His work on the series has earned him several awards and more than £60 million.
