Joaquin Phoenix hoax on Late Show with David Letterman fooled everyone, including the host, says writer.
Actor Joaquin Phoenix was part of a hoax during the "Late Show With David Letterman" that many found hilarious. The actor never broke character. He was a complete mess with very little to speak about.
When he did speak, it was more of a mumble as he franticly chewed his gum. Then when Letterman brought up the fact that he was chewing gum, he immediately stuck it under Letterman's desk. Many concerned fans have been wondering if this was a stunt or not.
Casey Affleck has finally cleared the air. Recently, the filmmaker stated that it was part of Phoenix's two year on-and-off screen role of a falling star flaming out for Affleck's pseudo-documentary, "I'm Still Here." According to writer Bill Scheft, "Dave knew about it, and Dave loved it because he could play along... It was great television."
Phoenix is due to return to the "Late Show With David Letterman" on September 22, 2010. It should be interesting to see if he will return as himself or another character altogether. "I'm Still Here" was released on September 10, 2010. However, it wasn't revealed to be a fake until after its release.
