TLC has announced that Kate Plus 8 has been canceled after this season after viewer ratings have dropped by 1 million. As a result, TLC has decided not to renew another season of the reality show. The network is also keeping an open door for any specials in the future.

The announcement comes a week after Kate Gosselin denied the show was getting the axe during an interview on “Today.”

“Nobody has told me about being canceled,” Gosselin said to Ann Curry. “We’re happy to continue on and will do so as long as people are watching.”

The show followed the Gosselin family, consisting of parents Jon and Kate and their eight children: fraternal twins and sextuplets. It follows the family through their daily lives, focusing on the challenges of raising multiple children. The show was one of the highest rated programs on TLC during its run, with the fifth season premiere seen by a record 9.8 million viewers, the most watched show of that evening, including broadcast television, twice as many viewers as the show’s previous series high.

The ‘Plus 8′ series will reach its 150th episode in its 8 and final season. The family originally appeared in two one-hour specials titled Surviving Sextuplets and Twins and Sextuplets and Twins: One Year Later. The show first aired on Discovery Health, but then aired on TLC from the third season on.

Seasons 3 to 6 was called ‘Jon and Kate plus 8′ until their split. On September 29, 2009, following the Gosselins’ separation, TLC announced that as of November 2, the program would undergo a name change, to Kate Plus 8, focusing on Kate as a divorced mother raising eight children with Jon appearing less frequently.
