Katherine Heigl is looking forward to returning to TV after playing Dr. Izzie Stevens on the ABC hit Grey’s Anatomy. Heigl will be starring in a new untitled drama on NBC, which she will also produce as she works with writer Alexi Hawley.

The details are unclear, but Hawley’s background as a writer-producer on ABC’s Body of Proof and Castle suggests the project would be a procedural drama rather than the kind of medical soap that made the actress a household name.

Heigl starred in Grey’s from its start in March 2005 until midway through the show’s sixth season, in January 2010. She quit, saying she wanted to spend more time with her daughter, Naleigh, adopted a few months earlier with husband Josh Kelley.

While still on Grey’s, she starred in movies such as Knocked Up and 27 Dresses. But her post-Grey’s career stalled, and early last year she said she wanted to return to the ABC series, and had asked producer Shonda Rhimes about revisiting the character. That never happened.

Her new project is currently in the script stage, but her potential return is likely to make it a serious contender for the 2014-15 season.
