Luke Skywalker is gay, and that’s why Han Solo was the one picking up all the ladies in Star Wars. Well, that’s the theory, but days after JJ Abrams, director of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” admitted that there are plans to include gay characters in future chapters of the iconic sci-fi series, Mark Hamill revealed that there may already be one, according to Daily Mail.

“Fans are writing and asking all these questions: ‘I’m bullied in school … I’m afraid to come out,'” Hamill said. “They say to me: ‘Could Luke be gay?’ I’d say it is meant to be interpreted by the viewer. If you think Luke is gay, of course he is. You should not be ashamed of it. Judge Luke by his character, not by who he loves.”

“To me, the fun of Star Wars is the glory of possibility,” Abrams continued in a recent interview. “So it seems insanely narrow-minded and counterintuitive to say that there wouldn’t be a homosexual character in the world.”

The movie didn’t give any indication that Luke Skywalker was gay. The reboot, which broke box-office records last year, has already been celebrated for breaking free from Hollywood norms by featuring a female lead character and a black supporting actor.

“When I talk about inclusivity it’s not excluding gay characters,” Abrams said. “It’s about inclusivity. So of course.”

One popular fan theory includes a blossoming romance between former Stormtrooper Finn (John Boyega) and ace Resistance fighter pilot Poe (Oscar Isaac).

Boyega said that, as far as he knows, it’s certainly possible.

“As far as I’m concerned, when JJ sat us down to go through the script, it was a bromance,” he said. “But now I’m learning what Mark Hamill said before, when he didn’t know that Darth Vader was Luke’s father: you never know what they’re going to pull. I’m looking at the director Rian [Johnson] closely so he can get me involved early, so I can prepare myself. So who knows?”

If Luke Skywalker is gay, it could help explained why he’s been the only character for whom he openly displayed any affection in the original trilogy of films was his sister Leia. There seems to be plenty of room for fans to project their own sexual preferences onto him.
