Nickelback cancels the second leg of its North American tour amid a “medical emergency” involving lead singer Chad Kroeger. Kroeger has been diagnosed with an operable cyst on his voice box and is getting ready for vocal surgery, according to the USA Today.
Nickelback is working with ticket distributors on refunds and hoping to reschedule most of the dates. Kroeger said he was sorry the band had to scrap dates for its No Fixed Address tour as it cancels all remaining shows.
“I am definitely not thrilled with the prospect of being silent for many weeks to come when I could be out there playing for our fans,” he said in a statement. “I am relying on my doctor and his team to help get my voice back in good form as quickly as possible.”
Nickelback cancels at a time when it already nixed a number of shows over the weekend. The band promises that anyone holding tickets will be refunded.
Nickelback guitarist Ryan Peake and bassist Mike Kroeger issued a statement explaining the situation.
“We completely understand people will be upset about this,” said Peake, “but we need him to properly take care of his voice so that we can continue to do this.”
Chad Kroeger, 40, is due to undergo surgery in three weeks, followed by a period of doctor-ordered rest.
The Nickelback singer, Alberta-born musician, who is married to Canadian pop rocker Avril Lavigne, is expected to make a full recovery. Kroeger confirmed that his wife was recovering from a severe case of Lyme disease earlier this year.
While the band cancels a number of shows, it hopes to resume the tour in Europe in Finland on Sept. 30, and return to North America sometime in 2016.
Earlier this week, the band cancelled its concert with Lifehouse at Sleep Country Amphitheatre in Ridgefield, north of Vancouver, Wash., as well as its show Saturday at The Gorge Amphitheatre. There were rumors spreading that the band broke up, or that Nickelback couldn’t get along with Lifehouse.
However, in reality, the lead singer was ill and they didn’t want to make any announcement until today. As Nickelback cancels their remaining tour, the band promises they will be back on stage soon after Kroeger’s surgery.
